The abbey, also known as Fonte Benedetta, was the first Benedictine monastery in the Casentino, founded between 983 and 996 by two German hermits, Pietro and Eriprando, probably on a transit road of Roman origin that connected the Valdarno to the Casentino. The monastery already had a great development in the 11th century and then in the following century, which lasted until the end of the 14th century, which led it to increase its material heritage and to have jurisdiction over many churches and castles in the Casentino and especially in the Valdarno. In 1193 the presence of a hospital owned by the abbey in Pratovalle is attested.[1] In the 15th century the monastery entered a phase of decline and already in 1425 it was entrusted to the Vallombrosan monks who, however, were unable to arrest its decline and gradual abandonment. At the end of the 17th century the Abbey was already compromised in several parts. Now abandoned, in the Napoleonic period the Abbey passed to the Corsican Marquises of Florence and from 1811 to the Cassi di Capraia who did not take care of the maintenance of the buildings, so that at the beginning of the twentieth century the Abbey was now a ruin. In 1968, a restoration of what remained was undertaken, concluded in 1974, which restored legibility to the architectural remains and allowed the area to be used. Wonderful Pratomagno. Spectacular views of the Casentino and Valdarno. You can spot the Verna hermitage, and if the day is clear you can see Radicofani and Amiata. At the top, beautiful photos of the panorama with the names.

A seemingly gigantic summit cross crowns the Pratomagno. But despite its enormous mass, the cross does not appear overwhelming; in fact, due to the steel truss construction (the most famous example of which is the Eiffel Tower in Paris), it appears almost delicate. The inauguration took place in 1928; the idea for its construction had come up two years earlier as part of the celebrations of the 700th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi. In the almost 100 years of its existence, the cross has required repairs/maintenance several times, and so it is to be hoped that it will continue to crown the summit and serve as a widely visible sign of blessing for the country and its people.

The direct climb we took is too steep and not recommended. It is better to choose the start at Pian dei Lelli, which we also used as a descent. The mountain trail at the top is sensational and fun.

With the gravel bike, the last few kilometers before the summit are already borderline, but with the best will in the world I can't imagine that with the racing bike. In any case, the summit is an absolute highlight of this region and worth a visit. The driveway from Montevarchi is partly shaded and "cool" by the forest and the watercourse. The road is narrow and since oncoming traffic is always to be expected, the speed on the descent must be adjusted accordingly.

Past today. Wonderful place. Tall grass in the ruins complex. Descent from Passo delle Forche bella tosta (full suspension and telescopic mtb highly recommended). Then path x Capraia ..... beautiful even if technical with sections where there is to go down ....
