In 1995, the town of Weil der Stadt installed the fountain, which is fed by a spring near the mill. Blacksmith Gerhard Längerer from Renningen crafted the four copper figures: Shepherd (1999), Dog (2002), Sheep (2007), and Schäfle (2009). The shepherd figure represents Fritz Weida, the last full-time shepherd of Schafhausen.

The Rankbach rises intermittently in the western Glemswald on the A8 federal highway, approximately one kilometer north of the Sindelfinger Wald rest area at approximately 485 m above sea level. It flows into the middle Würm at 385.8 m above sea level, shortly after the Planmühle mill on the northern edge of Weil der Stadt and before the Merklingen district further downstream.
