Orta San Giulio - Lake Orta Orta San Giulio - Lake Orta - Faith, nature, history and beauty - Lake Orta, with its 13.4 km long and 2.5 km wide, is a real jewel between the green of the Alps and vast hill forests. The silent little cousin of the majestic Lake Maggiore. The shores of the lake are dotted with small picturesque villages, ancient villages and marinas that tell the story of the life of the fishermen who were once the most numerous inhabitants of Lake Orta. Today, however, they are the accumulation of modern stories of pleasure boats and ports, of international quality tourism. Orta is an ideal destination for families, couples looking for a romantic place to relax, sports lovers and for young and old who love nature and its energy. Piazza Motta, Orta San Giulio Among the points not to be missed is Piazza Motta, the beating heart of the village, rich in history and vitality. In the centre of the square stands the Broletto, also known as the Palazzotto. Once it was the place where the representatives of the villages of the entire Riviera met to make the most important decisions. The building dates back to the sixteenth century. On the external walls you can see the coats of arms of the bishops who ruled the Riviera, three sundials and the symbol of Orta San Giulio: the coat of arms with the Hortus Conclusus. The Piazza Mario Motta, Orta San Giulio The Piazza Mario Motta: The atmospheric square in the center of Orta was named after the Italian freedom fighter Mario Motta, who fought in the Piedmontese resistance. The square itself is a prime example of Italian architecture. Colorful facades on the east side, opposite the lake with a row of chestnut trees (formerly elms). The small Palazzo della Comunità with a foundation of picturesque arcades (popular as a wedding backdrop) is unmissable. Shops, bakeries, restaurants, bars and boat docks are spread around the entire square. On the north side, the alley Salita di Motta leads up to the church of Maria Trost and the Sacro Monte, other alleys - almost star-shaped - open up other parts of Orta. The German-language television series “Treasures of the World - Heritage of Humanity” - which I can recommend without reservation - is dedicated to the places with UNESCO World Heritage sites on all continents and eras in short film clips. This includes the “SACRI MONTI” in northern Italy (there are a total of eight of these “Holy Mountains” in Piedmont and a ninth in Lombardy), which are presented to the culture-loving viewer in a 15-minute clip. This can be accessed in the ARD media library at the following link: => https://www.ardmediathek.de/video/schaetze-der-welt/heilige-berge-in-piemont-italien-folge-396/3sat/Y3JpZDovL3N3ci5kZS84ODgxMzc2

The foundation of the sanctuary dates back to the 17th century. The famous architect Alessandro Antonelli also participated in the expansion works that followed at various times.

The climb to Mottarone can be tackled from two sides: Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta. More shaded and in the woods is Lake Maggiore, which can start from Stresa or Baveno or from Gignese halfway through the route. Lake Orta side offers various options between Omegna, Orta, Agrano and Armeno.

READING TIP: If you want to relax with exciting reading during your holiday on Lago d'Orta, we recommend the two Piedmont crime novels "Lago Mortale" and "Isola Mortale" by Giulia Conti: * "In the midst of the shimmering August heat, former police reporter Simon Strasser dreams of nothing more than a refreshing swim in Lago d'Orta and a rain shower. But then he discovers the corpse of an influential manufacturer's son on an abandoned yacht. Simon's old instincts are awakened, but on In this tranquil lake everyone seems to have a secret - which must be protected at all costs." (Back cover of "Lago Mortale") * "After a stormy December night, the body of a woman washes up on the shores of Lake Orta. The dead woman is a very pretty young nun who recently came to Isola San Giulio to look for her missing mother. She did found out something that cost her her life? When two more bodies are recovered from the bottom of the lake, Simon Strasser can finally forget La Dolce Vita.In a case where nothing is as it first seems, the former police reporter and the local commissioner again a perfect team." One of the few saints who are also highly valued outside of Christianity is San Francesco, known in German-speaking countries as Francis of Assisi. Francis was born in Assisi in 1181/82 and died in 1226. In his youth, the son of wealthy parents, he was more of a bon vivant, but later turned to Christ. In the half-ruined little church of San Damiano, located on the hillside outside the city walls of Assisi, he was praying one day and heard the voice of Christ coming down from the cross, calling on him to “rebuild his church”. At first he took this request literally and restored the church building; later he realized that this was primarily about the church as the community of believers. Many people joined him and the Order of the Friars Minor of Francis of Assisi was created. Today there are three male branches in the broad Franciscan religious family: the Franciscans, the Minorites and the Capuchins; as well as two female ones: the Franciscan Sisters and the Poor Clares. His Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Assisi, the Basilica of San Francesco, which did not exist during Francis' lifetime, is nevertheless one of the great "original shrines" of the Franciscan religious family. It can be found here as a hiking highlight under this link: https://www.komoot.de/highlight/138624
