The castle is located on a hill 520 meters above sea level on the watershed between the Staffora valley and the Curone valley. The building is massive with an internal courtyard with a medieval well, it is surmounted by three crenellated towers, of which the highest is the oldest. Inside there are large halls with valuable frescoes, coffered ceilings and sixteenth-century fireplaces embellished with the weapons of the Malaspina family. In excellent condition, it belongs to private individuals and cannot be visited. In 1449 the town came under the control of the Sforza of Milan who in 1480 sent an expedition to punish the town, accused of being a den of bandits. In 1530 the Marquis Cesare Malaspina regained control and had the castle rebuilt, protecting it with an imposing wall. In 1743, according to the Treaty of Worms, Pozzol Groppo, called Pozzolo del Groppo, was united with the Kingdom of Sardinia and became part of the province of Bobbio. In 1801 the territory was annexed to Napoleonic France until 1814. On 11 April 1889 the last heir of the Malaspina, the Marquis Alberto Malaspina, died.
