Rosignano Monferrato, in the province of Alessandria, is an ancient village of early medieval origin (mentioned in the year 1000) that developed on a hill of "pietra da cantoni" (cornerstone) as a "sentinel of Casale." Having become a free municipality in 1250, the town has a turbulent history linked to the Monferrato area, famous for its resistance against the Spanish in 1640 and today a UNESCO World Heritage site for its Infernot (Hell Pits).

Nestled among centuries-old trees, Camino Castle dominates the ancient village from above and contributes to one of the most easily recognizable hilltop profiles of the Lower Monferrato.

The German-language television series "Treasures of the World - Heritage of Humanity" - which I highly recommend - is dedicated to short film clips featuring UNESCO World Heritage sites from all continents and eras. This includes the "Sacri Monti" in northern Italy (there are eight of these "Sacred Mountains" in Piedmont, and a ninth in Lombardy), which are presented to culture-loving viewers in a 15-minute segment. Located on the edge of the old city, this area represents an eloquent example of 19th-century urban planning and architecture. Piazza Alfieri (or Piazza del Palio) is surrounded by porticoed buildings and in its center stands the Monument to Vittorio Alfieri (1862) by Giuseppe Dini. It is also the place where the Palio di Asti takes place every third Sunday of September.
