Sasso Inferiore: Where Silence Tells History As a sign posted on one of its ancient stone houses states, what distinguishes the small village of Sasso Inferiore today is silence. This village, like many settlements in the area, was severely affected by depopulation following the abandonment of ancient practices of small-scale agriculture and herding, which for centuries had provided the meager sustenance of its inhabitants. Today, however, the surviving community of Sasso Inferiore is committed to honoring the past: a series of artistic sculptures populate the village, depicting the characters and activities of that now-vanished rural landscape. A touching way to keep alive the memory of "times gone by." Despite the exodus, the village continues to live in its characteristic stone houses, many of which have been brought back to life thanks to thoughtful and respectful restoration projects.
