The Dortmund-Ems Canal is a canal structure and a federal waterway between the Dortmund city harbor and Papenburg/Ems in the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony. The waterways and shipping offices for West German canals up to Gleesen and Ems-Nordsee up to Papenburg are responsible for its administration.

The canal promenade is one of our favorite routes.

The Loreto Chapel was built in 1726 and replaced the St. John's Chapel that had previously stood there, which in turn was built in 1651 on the site of the old leper house in Drensteinfurt. The Loreto Chapel follows the tradition of many European Loreto chapels, which are modeled on the Chapel of Our Lady in Loreto (Italy). The porch, which is open on three sides, also allowed sick people to take part in the devotions through the windows facing the chapel. (see information board there)
