A must for every Husumer, once a year we go on a tour to the memorial sites of Theodor Storm.

Anyone walking around the grave will notice that a tree trunk is now growing around the gravestone. A very beautifully maintained gravesite.

The fire hydrant became a symbol through the design of the memorial. Its remains represent the arbitrariness with which SS men and some Kapos beat and tortured the concentration camp prisoners. They used the fire hydrant to mistreat the prisoners: the men were tied to the metal column while soaking wet or had to sit on the cover of the fire hydrant (which is now missing) and remain there. The concentration camp prisoners were subjected to numerous other forms of harassment and punishment.

How much indescribable suffering was inflicted on people here by "people"! One stands in shock in the memorial in front of the remains of this cruel place! Never must something like this happen again. Nip it in the bud, today more than ever!

With completely inadequate supplies and accommodation, the Schwesingen prisoners had to carry out the hardest work in the cold and wet. The subcamp was led by Hans Hermann Griem, an SS lieutenant known for his cruelty, who also commanded the camp in Ladelund. The SS dissolved the camp in Schwesing in December 1944. Due to the inhumane conditions and as a result of mistreatment, more than 300 concentration camp prisoners died here. These dead were buried in mass graves in the Husum Ostfriedhof.
