Cerreto Guidi, a territory of gentle hills between Montalbano and the Arno river, owes its name to the Guidi counts, ancient feudal lords, who had built a castle there, not far from the route of the Via Francigena, the road of pilgrims and merchants. In a famous drawing by Leonardo da Vinci (1503), the Castle of Cerreto Guidi is depicted; the drawing "photographs", in a concise but plausible way, the urban layout of the village, which appears to be enclosed by the fourteenth-century walls, characterized by an almost circular path and the presence of eight towers. The taste for hospitality has always made stays among these hills cultivated with vines and olives pleasant: DOCG wines are produced here and Cerreto Guidi rightly belongs to the "Città del vino" association. Vineyards crisscross the hills dotted with beautiful farms, historic villas, and large farmhouses. In the countryside and near the smaller inhabited centers, churches and oratories bear witness to the ancient devotion to the patron saints.
