Historian Tarcisio Venuti dates its construction to around the 14th-15th century, although the first documentary mention of it dates back to 1533. The building underwent a radical transformation after the earthquakes of 1511 and 1513, inspired by the Slovenian style of the Škofija Loka school, like many other small churches in the area, but with a style unparalleled for the beauty of the statuettes, placed in the keystones and lateral lunettes, with figurative corbels supported by elegant columns. Dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, the sanctuary was consecrated in 1744 and is of great importance to Slovenian literature: in the 1490s, the so-called Castelmonte Manuscript (Starogorski rokopis in Slovenian) was written here, one of the oldest surviving documents written in the Slovenian language.
