2월 3, 2026, Belvedere Costabile di Castellabate
If you're cycling from north to south along the Cilento coast, this is the first real panoramic viewpoint. I recommend climbing up, avoiding the main road to avoid the bulk of traffic (there's a fork at the start of the climb). The view is worth the effort: beautiful.

Castellabate is a special corner of Campania located in the province of Salerno in the heart of the Cilento National Park. The town is an ancient village of medieval origins which is not only included in the ranking of the "most beautiful villages in Italy", but which is also considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In fact, the city, located about 300 meters above sea level, is characterized by narrow cobbled streets, ancient buildings that hide elegant courtyards and terraces that can offer wonderful landscapes.

4월 17, 2023, Pietra del Mulacchio Megalith
The Mulacchio stone is a prehistoric megalith on Monte Stella which probably served as a solar calendar and place of fertility for the ancient Cilento populations. With a ladder you can climb to the top and admire the 360 degree panorama.

9월 4, 2022, Celso (Pollica)
Small village, part of the Municipality of Pollica. As we read on the official website of the municipality, the origin of Celso is linked to the figure of some families from Pollica who, to escape the infighting of their country, took refuge higher up the hill: it still retains the ancient urban structure , which makes it a particularly characteristic place, especially in the districts of San Biase and Valle. Many houses are adorned with defensive towers, placed to guard massive driveways, which allow the passage of only one person at a time. Among the places of historical interest there is the Mazziotti Baronial Palace, now a national monument. Matteo Mazziotti was born here, a distinguished scholar of the Cilento Risorgimento and a parliamentarian in the post-war period. The Church of Celso is dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption. Built in local stone and decorated with terracotta frames, it has a very low bell tower compared to the architectural complex, built in the eighteenth century. The small church of San Giovanni, built in the early 1500s, stands on the rural road towards Casal Velino. It belongs to the nucleus of the ancient village of Praganito, a village abandoned in the 12th century.

Immersed in dense vegetation that almost hide it the gigantic boulders are the protagonists of many stories always told by the people of the villages at the foot of Monte della Star. One after the other, the women approached the stone giants, to perform an ancient rite, also handed down from generation to generation from the dawn of time: they entered the two narrow passages between the rocks and walked through them, taking care to touch the belly with the stone caressed by the sun, a guarantee of fertility. And they hoped that contact could give them the children they so desired. Thus the Petra 'Ru Mulacchio, the illegitimate Son of the Stone in Italian, held faith in the collective imagination to its ancestral fame, linked to cults and practices dating back to prehistoric times. And somehow remained current until the fifties of the last century. After that, for a few decades, that ancient tradition had fallen away in disuse as the frequentation of the Petra, of which it was almost losing your memory. Until, in 1985, that place had been recognized in its particularity and value by Professor Amedeo La Greca, who had made known well beyond the district of Monte della Stella the existence of that extraordinary site archaeological, one of the rare megalithic monuments in Italy. It is divided into three blocks, the Petra, separated by a natural phenomenon, which opened two very narrow galleries between them. But at the work of the elements was added that of man, who inserted between the boulders seven meters high of the large stones, while others he raised above above, horizontally, as if to form a roof. In those stones higher, where rainwater is collected, gods have been dug drains to drain it. The only modern addition is a staircase of wood placed a few years ago by the Park Authority. All the rest of the monument dates back to the second half of the third millennium BC. or, second others, at the beginning of the second millennium, when it was in that territory settled a population of proto-Apennine culture, therefore groups of shepherds, who followed the rhythm of the seasons for transhumance e they practiced fertility rites linked to the position of the sun. None of the boulders that make up the Petra are in a random position. All together they form a structure calibrated on the position of the sun, in able to accurately indicate the winter solstice and that in the summertime. Through the stones, the sun's rays penetrate at sunset in the galleries to form a blade of light, the / sun blade, / a phenomenon astronomical common to prehistoric megalithic structures such as Stonehenge, which can be considered as stone calendars. There position and length of the light blade change every day, in constant throughout the year: the maximum length occurs in winter solstice, the lowest on the summer solstice. An effect so precise that it could never be the result of displacements natural stones. For this the site of Monte della Stella was equated to a Cilento Stonehenge.

It is the land of oil and the Princes of Byzantium. Located a few kilometers from the renowned tourist resort of Acciaroli, this village is part of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park. It is made up of three localities, Casalsoprano, Casalsottano and Marina di Mezzatorre. The first two are located respectively in the upper and lower part and have the shape of the ancient villages of Cilento. The Mother Church dates back to the 12th century, as are the manuscripts and other artifacts found in the area, now preserved in the Elusa Museum. Marina di Mezzatorre, on the other hand, is a famous seaside resort characterized by equipped beaches, bathed by a beautiful turquoise sea. The surrounding area of San Mauro Cilento is characterized by ancient water mills, by paths immersed in the Mediterranean scrub and by olive groves. The quaint old town offers wonderful views of the sea. Every year the “Feast of the ancient flavors” is held, a characteristic convivial moment in which it is possible to taste specialties of the area based on artichokes, bacon and broad beans. The white figs are also very popular.

It is called Preta ru Mulacchio which in the Cilento dialect means "Stone of the Illegitimate Son" because it was also associated with fertility rites. "The complex", recalls Polcaro, "was frequented until the 1950s: women passed through the gallery because in popular beliefs the rock fertilized by the sun became capable of fertilizing". La Preta is basically made up of three boulders that have separated from a single block due to natural causes: between these three boulders, two “tunnels” have formed. However, the Preta has been profoundly modified by the work of man: large stones have been wedged in precise positions between the three original blocks, or placed to generate a roofing plan for the complex. In addition, some basins have been dug on the upper part of the Preta, which can be visited thanks to a wooden staircase prepared by the Park Authority. "The Petra has thus become a refined" stone calendar ", which indicates the date of the winter solstice with extraordinary precision", continues Polcaro. "Even in the absence of a precise dating, the megalith is probably attributed to the Proto-Apennine culture (beginning of the second millennium BC)". La Preta ru Mulacchio can be reached from the Sanctuary car park, where the bus is parked, with an easy path of about 400 meters and a difference in height of about 100 meters. From the sanctuary it is possible to observe the extraordinary panorama of the Cilento coasts. An archaeologist-astronomer explains how it was built, illustrates how it works as a "stone calendar" and tells of the millenary popular traditions that, until a few decades ago, demonstrated its association with fertility rites. https://archeologiavocidalpassato.com/tag/preta-ru-mulacchio/

You can walk on beautiful paths from Agropoli or St.Maria di Castellabate to these beautiful ruins, which are great to look at, but also very dilapidated and sometimes quite overgrown. Since the bricks are already very loose, it is easy to enter of the rooms not to be recommended.
