The current church building was built as the successor to a late Gothic church, whose choir was taken over as the Fugger family's crypt chapel. The church is dedicated to the memory of Our Lady of Sorrows. The originally Gothic church was rebuilt in the 17th century and redesigned in Rococo style in the 18th century. When it was rebuilt in the early 17th century, the eastern orientation was abandoned and the new church was laid out along a north-south axis.
