The current Basilica Sanctuary was built recently (1957-1979), but the history surrounding the cult is much older, dating back to the late eighth and early ninth centuries. The sailors were forced to disembark, but the ship remained motionless. Gradient is pretty even, the road is pretty large and recently paved. Not much shade this high up. From the top, you can keep climbing towards Floresta and Randazzo (maybe all the way to the Etna?) or take a right turn and descend towards Tortorici, the valley and (eventually) the coast
