The Cathedral of Sant'Agata in Catania is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Catania, a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church belonging to the ecclesiastical region of Sicily. The cathedral is located on the east side of Piazza Duomo and is dedicated to Saint Agatha, the patron saint of Catania.

The city's opera is dedicated to the Catania-born opera composer Vincenzo Bellini (Wikipedia). The ornate Teatro Massimo Bellini, in Sicilian Baroque style and with 1,200 seats upholstered in red plush, opened in 1890 with a performance of his most famous work, the opera Norma. His operas were also immortalized in the building. What is particularly spectacular are the ornate galleries, which rise to a golden dome with fresco medallions, which in turn depict scenes from Bellini's most famous works. Of course, the master himself also sits enthroned in the form of a statue in the marble foyer. One thing is certain: opera fans will really enjoy the Teatro Massimo Bellini - not least in the hall, which is known for its excellent acoustics. The program includes, how could it be otherwise, operas by Bellini, but also a wide repertoire of other operas and classical concerts. The program can be found on the website.

The cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin and Martyr Agatha, the patron saint of the city of Catania, and is located in the city center on the southeast side of the Piazza del Duomo. Various styles can be found in the cathedral: from the Norman period to the Baroque and Neoclassicism. In its original form it was an example of an "ecclesia munita", a "fortress church". In July 1926 she was appointed by Pope Pius XI. elevated to the rank of minor basilica.
