According to a tradition of the fourth decade of the eighteenth century until the mid-nineteenth century it was the mother church of the town. Little is known when it was built. The bishops of Agrigento during their pastoral visits of 1608, 1647 and 1677, in the city, never mentioned this church. It is known for sure that in 1733 the church was undergoing a refurbishment, with funds deriving from the proceeds of a leather tannery that the inhabitants had allocated to it. The church was renovated again in the time span from 1845 to 1853.
