This well used to be the most important place on which the entire community depended. Water was a source of life for humans and animals. Everyone knew the pump. This well was the central point within the fortress walls. Local facts and world news were shared here in the past. Now, between pot and pint or over a cup of coffee or tea, the gossip and worldly conspiracy theories are discussed on the nearby terrace.

In the past, this old city gate Porta Nuova was a new gateway to the city.

This medieval tower is the bell tower of the nearby San Pietro church. On the terrace you have a beautiful view of the city and the surrounding countryside.

According to some documents, the church of San Pietro, built at the foot of the Rocca, is the oldest in the town of Castiglione Garfagnana, and was even built in 723 by two Lombard brothers, Aurinand and Gudifrid. However, his consecration is commemorated in a marble inscription dated January 18, 1197 by the Bishop of Lucca Guido III. In the year 1444 he obtained the baptismal font. The bell tower stands on the tower of the same name, at the foot of which is a small building that enclosed the cemetery with an arch and formed a small square. Historical events have transformed the old church building and of the original only the north wall bordering the Rocca and part of the gable wall remain. The restorations carried out in the 1950s/60s unfortunately disfigured the façade and the cemetery. Inside the church of San Pietro there are three wooden statues of San Pietro, San Paolo and the Virgin and Child to decorate the main altar, works by Vincenzo Civitali commissioned in 1511; a painting by San Paolino bishop of Lucca, and ten slots a full frontal in inlaid scagliola by Carlo Gibertoni near the side altar of the Madonna dei Sette Dolori. The Castello del Leone, the ancient name of Castiglione di Garfagnana, is a fortified town, still intact and austere. The fate of Castiglione, unlike most of the villages of Garfagnana, has always been associated with Lucca since 1371 and, despite many attacks, has never submitted to the Estensi. The walls and majestic towers that surround the town date back to the 15th century and were built as a further defense of the Rocca, today a private residence, rising elegantly above the roofs of the houses and equipped with three more towers. From the fortress 'Rocca del Castello' the city is dominated and the view stretches from the Apuan Alps to the Apennines.
