After crossing the park boundary, a series of steep switchbacks begins, leading towards Lago Nero, Rifugio Berni, and Passo Gavia itself (2,621 m). This is one of the most scenic and demanding climbs in the entire Alps.

The park sign marks the entrance to the Lombard section of the Stelvio, which protects the southern slopes of the Ortles-Cevedale massif. This is a less frequented, wilder part of the park, with a rich fauna – you might spot marmots, chamois, and golden eagles.

From Vezza d'Oglio, the SP29 climbs through a wild, narrow valley, where the Oglio Gavia stream accompanies the route almost to the pass. Spruce and larch forests gradually give way to alpine meadows and rugged rock formations.

As you approach Passo Gavia from Vezza d’Oglio (Brescia province), you will pass the Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio sign – this is a sign that you are entering the southwestern edge of this huge park.
