4월 25, 2025, Naviglio della Martesana
Nice gravel ride, from Gessate to Cremona. 95% on paved cycle paths and dirt road in the woods along the Adda. The first stretch from Cassano to Lodi is very nice, all in the woods, several single tracks with tall grass or "cycle path" but with a dirt surface. The river is almost always nearby. From Lodi to Cremona all on paved cycle path, elevated on cultivated fields and more exposed to the wind. Stops in Lodi, Pizzighettone and Cremona for visits. Return by train.

Large wheel on the bank of the Naviglio Martesana, popularly called "rudun", was built by Cardinal Federico Borromeo in 1618 to raise the water from the canal and bring it to the kitchens of the palace as well as irrigating the vegetable gardens and gardens of the villa.

The Alessandro Taccani hydroelectric power plant is a work of architectural art located in Trezzo sull'Adda, along the right bank of the Adda river. Founded by industrialist Cristoforo Benigno Crespi, the plant has been generating clean and sustainable energy for over a century. Every year, it produces around 60 million kilowatt hours, equivalent to the average annual consumption of 24 thousand families. Behind her, the medieval castle of Trezzo, with its 42 meter high square tower towering above it.

Martesana is a historic area of Lombardy, located north-east of Milan, crossed by the Martesana canal. This canal was built in 1460 at the behest of Francesco Sforza. A journey along this canal offers the opportunity to discover the history and beauty of this region. One of the most popular escape routes in the city.

The water wheel is located in the center of Groppello, a hamlet in the municipality of Cassano d'Adda, on the bank of the Naviglio della Martesana. This large water wheel was built in Groppello by Carlo Borromeo, with the aim of raising water and channeling it to the gardens of the Villa Arcivescovile. Even today it is popularly nicknamed "Rudun" and was restored and put back into operation in 2009, with only educational functions at that point.

The place is very beautiful and characteristic and is also located near a fountain where you can get water. In addition, someone has set up a stand, minimalist but very useful, with some tools to fix your bike. If you need to recover energy, there is an ice cream shop next door. In short, a strategic point. Update to the last round of October 2024: the stand with the tools seems to be gone. The rest is as I left and described it.

To be precise, the hydroelectric plant is called TACCANI (Treccani is the encyclopaedia) from the name of the designer. Alessandro Taccani (1876-1947) was a young graduate in industrial engineering from the Istituto Tecnico Superiore in Milan, when Cristoforo Benigno Crespi involved him to build his hydroelectric plant along the Adda. A great officer and knight of labour, the engineer Taccani was president of the consortium for the alienation of electrical materials left over from the war (1920-1924) and was commissioner for Italy at the Basel exhibition (1926). Taccani disappeared on 8 July 1947 at the Gavazzeni clinic in Bergamo.

Personally, the Naviglio Martesana does not drive me crazy, but it is always a pleasant ride, especially in company. I prefer to follow it in the Cassano -> Milan direction when returning from a bike ride to the east. On weekends in spring and summer it comes alive and it is really impressive to see all these people cycling, running or spending time together.
