Lake Bolsena, located between Lazio, Umbria, and Tuscany, is the largest volcanic lake in Europe. A true natural wonder, thanks to its breathtaking landscapes, clear waters, quiet beaches, and villages rich in history and culture, this lake is an ideal destination for those who love tranquility, culture, and nature.

If you come to Umbria, you can't miss this beautiful city. Among the main attractions, I recommend: the Duomo, St. Patrick's Well, Orvieto Underground, the Pozzo della Cava, and finally the Etruscan Museum. The "e" in Orvieto is pronounced open like "ferro" (iron), not closed.

The dome of the church of Montefiascone is visible from afar and is a beautiful architecture that mimics the dome of St. Peter's which is exactly 100 km away. Montefiascone is on the Via Francigena.

Built between 1527 and 1535 by order of Pope Clement VII to defend the city from potential attackers after the dramatic experience of the sack of Rome, it was built by digging into the tuff of the plateau on which Orvieto stands, it is 54 meters deep and is a work of high hydraulic engineering. Worth a visit!

Once you reach the top of the Orvieto cliff, it is nice to enjoy the spectacle of the countryside surrounding the city, full of suggestive views that also make you go uphill, often quite challenging.

The Bolsena Lake Viewpoint in San Lorenzo Nuovo offers a breathtaking panorama of the lake and surrounding landscapes. Lake Bolsena, the fifth largest lake in Italy and the largest lake of volcanic origin in Europe, is a beautiful sight to behold. From the viewpoint, visitors can enjoy the almost circular lake surrounded by the Monti Volsini, a low mountain range.

If Orvieto is splendid, the Duomo is a precious stone set in its historic center. The design is Romanesque, then embellished with many elements in Gothic style. The square is wonderful. You can't not come here!

The entire old town is built on a rocky plateau made of tuff rock. This city rock is criss-crossed by a labyrinth of cellars, corridors and huge cisterns, a small part of which has been opened up again for visits. Numerous Etruscan tombs arranged in rows of streets can be found directly below the city rock, and there were tombs with paintings on the slopes opposite the city.

Orvieto is a city located on the flat top of a large volcanic tuff hill. The city rises dramatically above nearly vertical tuff walls complemented by defensive walls built of the same stone. The cathedral, a masterpiece of Italian Gothic architecture, commemorates the Eucharistic miracle of Bolsena. Built in 1290 by Arnolfo di Cambio, it features a magnificent façade completed in the 16th century. Inside, the chapels of San Brizio and the corporal are unmissable. The church of Sant'Andrea, completed in the 13th century, and that of San Giovenale, with a massive bell tower, are examples of Romanesque architecture. The People's Palace, a 12th-century Romanesque-Gothic building, and St. Patrick's Well, 62 meters deep with spiral staircases, are other attractions. Orvieto has a thousand-year history which can be best appreciated in its vast system of underground cavities.

4월 13, 2023, Pozzo di San Patrizio
The city of Orvieto certainly deserves a visit for its cultural and artistic wealth. The Pozzo di San Patrizio is a masterpiece of Renaissance engineering, with a double helical spiral staircase that allowed going up and down without crossing each other.

Capodimonte is a promontory along the south coast of Lake Bolsena. It houses a small and characteristic tourist port, from where boat trips depart to visit the islands of the lake. The view of the Rocca on the lake is also worthwhile.

Montefiascone is one of the symbolic towns of the Via Francigena, because it marks 100 km away from Rome. An enchanting historic center frames a beautiful view of Lake Bolsena.
