In the 13th century it was a possession of the Malatesta family, under whom the town managed to prosper until the abolition of feudalism at the dawn of the 19th century. After the brief Napoleonic period, the municipality passed to the Church in 1816, followed by the Risorgimento uprisings, the passage of Giuseppe Garibaldi and the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy. The etymology of the name Roncofreddo is uncertain, as are the origins of the town. The first documented information dates back to the documents of the Bavarian Code (an ancient administrative register of the Church of Ravenna dating back to the 7th-10th centuries, currently kept in Munich) where in n.70 mention is made of the concession by an archbishop of Ravenna to Tybalt , son of Leone del Duca Orso, of an estate called Fundum Roncofrigido. The first news about the castle dates back to around the year one thousand. Subject to the control of the Archbishops of Ravenna, in 970 it was granted as a fief to Rodolfo, Count of Rimini. During the 12th century, with the rise to power of the Malatesta family, from the Guelph side, the castle of Sorrivoli, like most of the surrounding territories, also found itself under the control of this powerful family, and more precisely of the Malatesta branch of Sogliano . Subject in this period to the episcopate of Cesena, in 1290 it was reattributed to the archbishopric of Ravenna. What is certain is that in 1371, at the time of the census carried out by card. Anglico Sorrivoli was a possession of the Church of Ravenna and had "40 hearths". Enfeoffed in the 15th century to the Roverella family of Cesena, it remained under the control of this family until the extinction of the lineage, then passing to the Allocatelli Fabbri and after the Second World War to the parish prebend.

and exact origins are not documented, it can be hypothesized that around the year 1000 the locality was a possession of the Ravenna church. For years disputed between the Church and the municipality of Rimini, a first fortified tower was probably built in the 13th century. The first real fortress, built by the municipality of Rimini, dates back only to the 14th century. Possession of the Malatesta family until 1335, it was conquered by Francesco degli Ordelaffi, lord of Forlì and subsequently ceded to the Montefeltro family, to then return under the control of the Holy See and subsequently in 1433 again of the Malatesta family. In 1485 it returned to the control of the archbishop of Ravenna and was enfeoffed to the Roverella family of Cesena who held it until 1745. Important expansions and the transformation from a castle to a summer residence date back to this period, and at the same time the construction of homes on the ancient wall circuit was encouraged, demolishing the previous ones closest to the palace and creating the hanging garden in their place. The Roverellas were succeeded in 1745 by the Guiccioli, a family that held the castle until 1960, the year in which it was sold to the current owners, the Volpe counts.

We go up towards Monteleone, a small hamlet of Roncofreddo with only 34 inhabitants, 364 meters high and an orange flag. The medieval village arranged in a crescent shape is very small and the castle which has been transformed into a country residence since the 18th century is characterized by an access ramp covered in grass. Monteleone was a fiefdom of the Malatesta family, subsequently the castle was the property of three families: the Roverellas until 1745, the Guicciolis until 1970 and finally the Volpes. Today the square is named after Lord Byron, an English poet, due to the events that united him with Teresa Gamba, wife of Count Guiccioli, owner of the castle. Byron was in Italy from the spring of 1819 as a servant knight to Guiccioli's wife, following her in various residences: Venice, Ravenna and Monteleone. The letters, preserved in the Classense Library in Ravenna, testify that there was an intimate relationship between the two. Byron was also a friend and involved in the Carbonari activities of Teresa's brother, Pietro Gamba: the two left Liguria together to go and fight in Greece for the war of independence. Byron remains an important traveller. It was he who coined the concept of the "fatal gift of beauty", that is, the impact that Italy has on the senses to such an intensity that it blurs vision and confuses critical judgment.

Montiano, a natural balcony on the hills that dare to reach the sea, is rich in flavors and ancient vestiges. A legend has it that this village was founded by Roman slaves who, fleeing from the chains of forced labor, redeemed their freedom, finding a refuge and a new homeland here. Due to its strategic position, Montiano was over the centuries under the dominion of noble families, the most important of which were the Malatesta, and by the Holy See, amidst disputes that continued until the unification of Italy. ... The heart of the town is the ancient Rocca Malatesta which, with its shape, outlines the borders of the village, the ancient home of Giacomo Malatesta. (Source: https://ipercorsidelsavio.it/localita/montiano/ ) The fortress, whose first structures date back to the 9th century, was adapted into a rich residential residence by Giacomo Malatesta, lord of the county of Montiano since 1570. The building, which suffered numerous damages during the Second World War and was affected following various renovations, it is now home to a kindergarten and can be visited externally. Giacomo Malatesta was also responsible for the construction of an access gate to the village which, due to the restoration promoted in 1712 by Sigismondo Spada, is known as Arco degli Spada. Next to the Malatesta door is the deconsecrated church of S. Francesco, today a cultural centre... ... Just outside the village, on a hill from which you can enjoy a beautiful view, there is the Parco delle Rimembranze: following the long staircase that leads to the top of the hill you arrive at the War Memorial, erected in 1925 in memory of the people from Montiano who fell in the Great War. Sorrivoli Castle Outside the walls, the two access doors to the historic center are still visible and well-preserved. Today the fortress is also accessed by passing through a staircase that starts from the main road and leads directly to the entrance of the castle. The Rocca, still intact in its external structures and in the keep, stands on the left bank of the Rubicone river, in the hilly area that marks the border between the province of Cesena and that of Rimini. the castle is imposing and well preserved, all the typical characteristics of feudal structures can be seen. Rectangular in shape, with four square bastions on either side, it is accessed from the town's main road through a staircase that leads to the ancient entrance to the fortress, surmounted by a small brick bridge that replaced the original drawbridge. Note the bridge holes above the vaulted entrance, testifying to the presence of the aforementioned drawbridge. After passing the short entrance vault, you come out into the internal courtyard and on the left you immediately notice the mighty and high square tower.

The Malatesta Fortress (late 16th century) which dominates the town of Montiano is now only partially open to visitors. Heart-shaped, it overlooks and fills the small village. From the outside, its high walls hide the elegance of the interior and give the building a corrupt and powerful air. At the time of its greatest splendor it had elegant crenellated walls, large rooms, precious frescoes, a church and a large garden. (Source: https://emiliaromagnaturismo.it/it/localita/montiano) Residence of the Malatesta family by the will of Carlo Felice, the most substantial part of its construction dates back to the sixteenth century, but the first walls almost certainly date back to the ninth century. Heavily compromised during the last war, it was partially demolished to avoid further dangerous collapses. Later some parts were rebuilt and the municipal kindergarten was housed there.
