A must-see stop at the little church even if you are not a believer, with Gregorian chant music in the background.

Definitely a nice route, quite easy and quiet because it is not crowded. Allow me to correct the length of the route, which is not about 8 km as written, but well over 12, this is for information only. Advised.

The medieval castle of Brendola dominated the plain and the passage between the present-day provinces of Vicenza and Verona, which for centuries was a contested border between various states and factions. Precisely because of its important strategic position, it featured an imposing, complex, and fortified architecture. It is also known as the "Bishops' Fortress," having served as the bishop's jurisdiction and refuge for centuries. Built at least as early as the year 1000, over the centuries it was the scene of battles and sieges, reflecting the vicissitudes of history and changes of power. In 1513, it was occupied by the Spanish and in 1514 reconquered by the Venetian Republic, which ordered its destruction to prevent the castle from "further serving as a potential refuge for Spaniards, Germans, or other enemies of the Republic." Of the fortress, only the keep (under renovation) and fragments of the walls that once surrounded the entire hill and the old town remain. https://prolocobrendola.it/castello-rocca-dei-vescovi/

Be careful if done downhill, as there are several fairly high bumps that are used to divert the water downstream so as not to ruin the driveway.

Easy stretch of military road inserted in the route, ORTOGONALE 1, which started from Villa Zileri and ended after about 50 km, in Campogrosso, close to the first lines during the First World War.

Built in the 10th century, it became the property of the powerful Montecchi family in the 13th century. The castle was rebuilt and strengthened by Ezzelino III da Romano in 1243. In 1269 the building was occupied by Pulcinella delle Carceri and some exiles from Verona, fighting against Mastino I della Scala, who used it as his own refuge. In 1279 it was donated to Niccolò della Scala, son of Mastino I, by the pope Pope Niccolò III, in gratitude to the Scaligeri for their capture, in Sirmione, of a group of Albigensian heretics (Cathars). At the beginning of the 15th century it was occupied by the Republic of Venice, after wresting it from the Carraresi, allied at that time with Guglielmo della Scala, illegitimate son of Cangrande II della Scala, elected by them as lord of Verona in 1404. For his military merits, the Venetians in 1509 granted Illasi as a fief to their valiant leader Count Girolamo Pompei, known as "Malanchino", whose family had boasted rights in those places for centuries. The leader deserved the credit for having captured and translated into Venetian prisons on 8 August of the same year, the Marquis of Mantua Francesco II Gonzaga, who had set out to conquer Legnago. 🇮🇹 Chiesa incompiuta del secolo scorso, mai portata a termine con interruzione dei lavori durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. La storia su: fondoambiente.it/luoghi/duomo-di-brendola-detto-l-incompiuta 🇬🇧 Unfinished church of the last century, never completed with interruption of the works during the Second World War. The history: "At a time when parochialism in Brendola was very harsh, the four parish priests of Brendola formed a committee in 1926 to build a new church capable of uniting all the Brendolans under a single central bell tower (also geographically). The 14th of October 1928 bishop Ferdinando Rodolfi arrived at Cerro, the area purchased for construction, giving his approval for the start of the works. Under the project of the architect Fausto Franco, the first stone was laid on October 3, 1931 and immediately the project made use of the 'union of the forces of many Brendolans from every hamlet, strictly volunteers, using the stones of the Monte Comunale and the sand of the Guà, proceeding with such haste to ask the bishop for permission to work on Sunday. During the summer of 1933 the erected columns were already visible; when the archpriest fell ill two years later, the work did not stop and the heads of the family continued to bring materials and to build. On the top of the facade is placed an imposing statue of St. Michael the Archangel 4 m high, sculpted by Giuseppe Zanetti. In the middle of the Second World War, however, the construction site stopped without starting again, for reasons that are still not completely clear. The building, 28.5 m high with a volume of 1124 m², remains unfinished a step away from completion, clearly visible on the Cerro hill, left to decay for more than 60 years, during which various projects have been proposed without ever conclusion." Part of Ortogonale 1 which starts from Monteviale (VI) and arrives at the Campogrosso pass, in the Municipality of Recoaro. This military road was built in 1917 to facilitate the retreat of our soldiers, should the Austro-Hungarians break through on the Pasubio war front. This stretch is characterized by two stone bridges built at that time. Gravel ground with medium grain and slope around 8-10%.
