Mount Crociglia and Mount Carevolo are two of the most panoramic peaks in the entire Piacenza Apennines. Their peaks share common characteristics: first, their shape—large, grass-covered domes—and second, the lack of significant elevations in the immediate vicinity, making them exposed to the wind but also offering exceptionally beautiful viewpoints. The summit of the mountain (1,578 meters), highlighted by the large statue of the Archangel Raphael, erected in memory of those who fell in the mountains: 😓😓 Luigi Mazzocchi 1975 Giulio Fox 1977 Paolo Fox 1977 Pino De Lorenzi 1979 Giovanni Razzini 1981 Giovanni Tosi 1981 Mauro Fariselli 1990 Mario Sanpaolo 1990 Renata Scaramuzza 2002 Emanuele Patti 2017 Luca Bernini 2024 From here you can enjoy a 360° view of the Nure Valley.

The most famous crucifix in Italy is not found on the tops of the mountains, although there are many summit crosses across the country - like here on Monte Ragola - but in literature: The author Giovanni Guareschi, spiritual father of the protagonists 'Don Camillo' and 'Peppone', has included another main character in his stories - which are well-known and popular far beyond the country's borders: the crucified Christ, who speaks to Don Camillo from the high altar. The author himself makes the following comment: "So you have to explain: if the priests feel insulted by Don Camillo, they can smash a candlestick on my skull for all I care; if the communists are insulted by Peppone, they can break a club on my back; but if someone feels insulted by Christ's speeches, there's nothing you can do. Whoever speaks in my stories ... is my Christ, that is, the voice of my conscience. My personal business, my affair. And therefore: each for himself and God for all.” (G. Guareschi)

On Monte MAGGIORASCA, hikers are not greeted by a summit cross, but by a figure of the Virgin Mary: the statue of Our Lady is enthroned on the mountain on a stone base several meters high and tiered several times. From its exposed location it looks out into the vastness of the country. The builders certainly wanted to ask Mary's blessing for the land - and especially the people living there. In 1947, shortly after the end of the Second World War, the population built this Marian shrine here. It is dedicated to the Black Madonna of Guadelupe, the most important pilgrimage site on the American continent, located in Mexico.

In addition to the view that hikers can enjoy here on Monte CAREVOLO (provided the weather is good), the summit cross that crowns the mountain is also interesting and worth a closer look: the longitudinal and cross beams are not fully constructed, but only as a frame. In the resulting free space of the inner cross, the body of the crucified Christ is indicated with just a few lines. However, the lively lines do not suggest the suffering Christ hanging on the cross, but it seems to me as if the artist wanted to indicate the overcoming of death and suffering when designing it and thus gave the summit cross of Monte Carevolo an Easter perspective.

Mount Ragola, m. 1,712 a.s.l., is an imposing and massive mountain, which rises on the watershed between Nure and Ceno just north-east of the Zovallo Pass. The summit area consists of a wide and almost flat ridge, scattered with blocks of rock, among which there are some isolated specimens of mountain pine.

Monte Crociglia, m. 1,578 a.s.l., also known locally as Monte dell'Angelo, is a large grassy mountain that rises on the watershed between Aveto and Nure, immediately north of the homonymous pass. The large statue of the angel placed at the top is also an occasion for meditation; four steles on the sides of the pedestal commemorate the war dead of the nearby town of Torrio and the victims of the mountain, including the unfortunate ones of Pizzo Palù and Brentei.

The route climbs up through some bushes until it reaches the wide grassy saddle of the Costazza on the watershed between the Nure and the Ceno. Here there is a crossroads of paths, on the right the path 003 leads to the summit of Monte Nero while on the left the path 007 leads to Monte Bue after about twenty minutes. We continue straight down along the glacial valley immersed in the dense forest.

Along the upstream Prato della Cipolla you arrive at the refuge of the same name. Before the refreshment area, our route starts on the right on the obvious slope that goes up the ski slope. You pass a nice viewpoint that offers a different perspective on the Tooth of the Onion. Then, on the left, you will find the 007 trail sign which comes from the Sacchi bivouac. We continue to the right on the Aveto-Nure watershed, we ignore the deviation that leads to Lago Nero, then uphill we arrive at the summit of Monte Bue. On the left you can see the ruins of the arrival station of the old cable car that went up from Rocca d'Aveto, while on the right you can see the new renovated refuge and the second section of the chairlift that goes up from Prato della Cipolla. On clear days the landscape is grandiose, extending to the south over the entire Val d’Aveto and to the north over Prato Grande and Val Nure.
