Quiet and cool gravel road

In the countryside between Conselice and Massa Lombarda, a pedal-powered printing press, known as a "pedalina," was hidden in various locations. It was used for the clandestine production of Ravenna's press during the Resistance. In November 1943, the first issue of "L'Unità" was printed here, with a print run of 3,000 copies, distributed by couriers. The provincial federation of the clandestine PCI sent Giuseppe D'Alema to oversee the editorial staff of the newspaper, which eventually reached a circulation of 25,000. The pedalina printed the newspapers and leaflets of all the CLN parties, and it also edited, among others, "La Lotta," the organ of the Romagna Communist Federations. The 200-ton bridge was removed on July 31, 2025, by a giant crane for safety reasons after the 2023 flood; the pylons inside the riverbed will then be removed: another piece of history that is gone 😪

The convent of San Francesco, dating back to the 13th century, is the oldest convent building in the city of Bagnacavallo. The complex includes the church and the large convent that houses: the beautiful Sala Oriani or “New Refectory”, the cloister, the monumental staircase and the rooms on the first floor (not restored) used as exhibition spaces, the basement and the “large attic” also known as the Sala delle Capriate. Dating back to the mid-1200s, the convent of Bagnacavallo was one of the first to be built after the death of San Francesco. Considering that the first convents were built in places of heavy traffic, we must deduce that Bagnacavallo at the time was an important road junction and a stop for wayfarers. The convent complex underwent renovations and expansions over the centuries, the most important of which occurred in 1460 and 1667 (works by Andrea Galegati). It took on its current appearance at the end of the 18th century, with the interventions of the architect Gioacchino Tomba from Faenza. After the suppression of religious orders due to Napoleonic edicts, the building became largely public property. From 1875 to 1959 the convent was home to public schools and during the Second World War the immense underground areas were used as a refuge for the population. Only a small part of the building, in the twentieth century, was inhabited by the Conventual Friars Minor. This part, after the transfer of the religious to other locations, is no longer accessible to the public. The Ancient Parish Church of San Pietro in Sylvis, from the 7th century, is one of the best preserved Romanesque parish churches in the Ravenna area ... The basilica was probably built near an ancient Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter. The place where it stands could correspond to the easternmost of the ports, along the southern shore of the marshes, used by pilgrims, around the year 1000, to reach Rome along the Via dei Romei.
