The Santerno Morto is today a riverbed which today constitutes a reservoir for the excess water of the Canale dei molini; the name derives from the ancient bends that characterized the river south of Sant'Agata: within just over three km, the Santerno formed six. In case of rain, the level of the river could rise up to overflow, with serious danger for the population. The bends to the south of the town were eliminated between 1885 and 1888, with the construction of the so-called "drizzagno" (a straightening of about 2.5 kilometres), together with the raising of the banks along the entire river.
