Gateway to the city center.

Of the four city gates that once secured access to the town of Kempen, only the gate tower of the Cow Gate remains. It takes its name from an old cattle track that led to the lush pastures in the marshland to the north. The originally simple, squat tower of the Cow Gate was built around 1350. It survived the demolitions of 200 years ago – first because it was still in relatively good condition, and then because it proved useful as the town jail from 1828 onward. It was once called the "St. Nicholas Gate." The modern statue of St. Nicholas above the gate passage serves as a reminder that this was the way to St. Nicholas' Chapel near the "Schloot," a border crossing to the Duchy of Guelders. Pious depictions at such gates were intended to encourage devotion upon leaving the city and to ward off dangers such as war and plague. The so-called Cow Gate Madonna from the 15th century is another example of this. The original Bohemian Pieta, dating from around 1520, is located in the Municipal Kramer Museum.
