Crossing over the Saar for pedestrians and vehicles.

The quiet path leads through the Ellbach valley. I was happy to read that the Ellbach is being rebuilt. The valley is to be renaturalized from the source to the mouth by 2027. New habitat for birds and dragonflies is to be created. Ecological deficits caused by the straightening are to be compensated. Pretty little farm roads lead up to Mangelhausen, which you usually have all to yourself. There are beautiful views everywhere.

Not necessarily beautiful, but definitely interesting.

Although the bridge is an easy way to cross the Saar, the crossing over the Rehlinger Lock, 500m further downstream, is more interesting.

Overall, the Saar Cycle Path is easy to ride on a road bike, with the exception of the section between the Nied estuary and Merzig, where the expansion joints are quite severe. Update May 2025: This section is currently being torn up and resurfaced! Many sections have already been reworked 👍🏼.
