The Citadel, also known as the Sarzana Fortress or Firmafede Fortress, was the first fortification in Sarzana, built in the 13th century. It was owned by the lord Castruccio Castracani, who made numerous significant modifications to its defenses. After its destruction by Florence in 1487, it was rebuilt on the orders of Lorenzo de' Medici. In 1494, the Republic of Genoa, having regained possession of Sarzana, completed work on the Citadel. The fortress is used as a venue for cultural events and exhibitions and also houses the Fortress Museum, an interactive exhibit that traces the history of Sarzana and the Lunigiana region.

A very easy and pleasant ride. Much of the route follows secondary roads with very little traffic. Splendid views of Fosdinovo Castle, the mouth of the Magra River, and the Bay of La Spezia.

The Duomo di Massa, officially known as the Cattedrale dei Santi Pietro e Francesco, is the main Catholic place of worship in Massa and the mother church of the diocese of Massa Carrara-Pontremoli. It is a national monument of Italy. The cathedral has a rich history. There are reliable sources dating back to 1477 when Taddea Pico Malaspina, wife of Marquis Giacomo I Malaspina, transferred the titles and goods of the extra-urban church of S. Remigio and S. Pancrazio and the suppressed monastery of Turano to this church. The building was almost completely rebuilt between 1660 and 1670. This included the layout and furnishings of the chancel, including a monumental high altar, two altars in the transept, and the marble covering of the walls and floor. The cathedral is dedicated to Saints Peter and Francis. The interior is richly decorated with valuable marble sculptures and a wooden crucifix considered miraculous. The altar, made of marble in 1626, has a polychrome wooden crucifix by Giovanni Pisano from the early 14th century.

The mighty Malaspina castle/fortress dominates the center of the city of Massa from the top of one of the rocky hills that end the valleyi of the Frigido stream. The toponym 'Massa' is high and easily identified in Tuscany; its original meaning was 'extensive landholdings'. More info at www.castellitoscani
