Monte Gorzano, with its 2,458 meters is the highest peak in Lazio. Going up from Cesacastina or Capricchia, this mountain looks like a large grassy plateau, but it is enough to look north-east to find yourself on a deep rock face overhanging the valley below.

Between Lazio and Abruzzo is a peak with an old story behind. It was an important place for the shepherds. They brought their sheeps there. It was also and old way to go from their villages in Abruzzo to Amatrice in Lazio.

Monte Gorzano is located at 2458 meters, and is the maximum elevation of the Laga. It can be reached both from the Lazio side and from the Abruzzo side.

From this point you can enjoy a splendid view of Monte Vettore, the highest mountain of the Sibillini with its 2476 metres. To the south, however, the Tronto valley extends. At this point you are straddling the border between Umbria and the Marches. On the eastern wall of Monte Vettore the "Strada delle Fate" is visible, a path now in disuse which, according to legend, was created by the fairies fleeing Castelluccio who were forced to leave the town at sunrise because they stayed too long to celebrate. Just above the path, much more visible, there is a fault that opened during the 2016 earthquake.

The summit of Monte di Mezzo at an altitude of 2155 m overlooks the town of Campotosto and the lake of the same name.
