At 891 metres between the municipalities of Rocca di Papa and Lariano, the peak of Maschio di Ariano is part of the Alban Hills and owes its name to an ancient castle, whose construction is attributed to the Roman gens Aria (or Arria), and whose destruction probably dates back to the 14th century.

During the year (2023) the Confraternity of the SS.Sacramento of Rocca di Papa installed an iron cross in the panoramic point of the Maschio delle Faete, which now dominates the entire landscape below

938 meters high, it is the third of the three "Colli Albani" that made up the Internal Caldera of the Ancient Latium Volcano, together with the Maschio delle Faete and Monte Cavo: The Viasta over the entire ex-caldera and the underlying Campi d'Annibale is excellent ; moving a little downhill, you can enjoy a broad panorama towards Tusculum and the other heights towards Rocca Priora which, with the Artemisio Mountains behind it, formed the External Caldera, and then further on, towards the countryside east of Rome and the Prenestini Mountains.
