In Taranto, mussels and other mussels have been cultivated since time immemorial. Oyster farming was already flourishing in the late Roman era and in the Middle Ages thanks to the low salinity in particular of the Mar Piccolo which favored the rapid growth of mussels. In the 16th century, the regents of Taranto established precise rules in the Red Book to avoid the overexploitation of coastal lagoons and the damage caused by certain fishing gear: a text that will be one of the cornerstones of the fishing regulations of the Kingdom of Italy.

Statte is located about ten kilometers from the capital Taranto and its territory is characterized by hills and ravines. The historic center is divided into two parts: an older part, carved into the rock along a blade called Canale della Zingara, and a more recent part, built in the first decades of the 20th century, occupying other blades on the slope of a hill.

Mussel farming is a very widespread activity in Taranto and with very ancient origins dating back more than a thousand years ago. Here you can find fishermen dedicated to their work.

Along the road you come across the mouth of the Cervara river, the WWF Palude La Vela oasis, and numerous mussel farms, a typical product of the Taranto area.
