Beautiful square with the amphitheater together a real highlight

Saint Stephen, the patron saint of this church in Soleto, is one of the first seven deacons of the original Jerusalem church and the first martyr (martyr) of early Christianity. The church commemorates him on Boxing Day, December 26th. When Stephen recounted his vision of the open heavens: "But he, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God" (Acts 7:55), the people were so outraged that they drove him out of the city and stoned him.

I rode the cycle/pedestrian path that runs through Santa Caterina: a real pleasure to pedal on quiet roads, with suggestive views and a relaxing atmosphere. A perfect stretch to enjoy the bike in total serenity, immersed in the charm of the place.

Inside the very interesting exhibition of Giuseppe Palumbo, the photographer on a bicycle who documented Salento between 1907 and 1959 and in the various rooms an exhibition path with original images, articles and studies dedicated to the phenomenon of tarantism. A short distance away in the enchanting historic center of Corigliano d'Otranto is the church of San Nicola Vescovo with a valuable mosaic depicting the tree of life.

The clock on the wall is particularly pretty.

Churches and chapels throughout the world are dedicated to the Madonna under many different names. Sometimes the patronal feast is one of her numerous feast days in the liturgical calendar, but here in Sannicola, the Mother of God is invoked as "Our Lady of Consolation"—also known in German as "Comforter of the Afflicted." Veneration under this name perhaps particularly emphasizes the Madonna's importance in popular piety, for since the early Christian centuries, people have turned to the Mother of God with confidence and with their many sorrows.
