Who is Victor Hugo (1802-1885), in whose name this viewpoint is located? As far as I can tell, he was a French author of works such as "Les Misérable." He stayed in Vianden regularly between 1862 and 1871 as a tourist, exile, or political refugee.

I had the impression that someone lived in the water tower, but I could be wrong. The memorial is an impressive work commemorating the horrors of war. It is dedicated to all those harmed by mines and other munitions.

Beautiful castle near Vianden above the Our. The castle can be visited inside. Vianden Castle, built between the 11th and 14th centuries on the foundations of a Roman fort and a Carolingian refuge, is one of the largest and most beautiful feudal residences of the Roman and Gothic eras in Europe. Until the beginning of the 15th century, it was the residence of the powerful Counts of Vianden, who could boast of their connections with the imperial court, as Henry I (1220-1250) had Marguerite de Courtenay as his wife, a close relative of the Capetian kings from France. In 1417 the county and the castle were inherited by the younger branch of the (German) House of Nassau, which also seized the French Principality of Orange in 1530. The chapel and the two manor houses, the most notable parts of the castle, were built towards the end of the 12th to the beginning of the 13th century. The Julier's quarters, located to the west of the now defunct manor house, date from the early 14th century; The Nassauer quarters were only built in the 17th century. 1820, during the reign of William I of Orange-Nassau, King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Count of Vianden, led to the sale of the castle and its decline. In 1890 the castle became the property of the Grand Duke Adolphe of Nassau and from then on remained in the possession of the grand ducal family until 1977, when it became the property of the Luxembourg state through a purchase agreement. The rocky ridge above today's town of Vianden was first fortified in late antiquity. The excavations carried out in 1994 at the foot of the castle chapel led to the realization, based on the findings secured in a second relocation, that parts of the rising masonry of the late antique tower must have still existed in the Merovingian period, and that this square part of the building was the only remaining structure from late antiquity in the first medieval period System was integrated.At a prehistoric road connection, which led as a branch ("side road") from the great Roman road Reims - Cologne through the Ardennes and the Ourtal into the Sauertal and via Echternach in the direction of Bitburg to the then metropolis of Trier, was built at the beginning of the In late antiquity, the first fortification was built on the Schlossberg, probably as a civilian-used “refuge” during the time of constant Germanic threat (around 275 AD).
