Morano Calabro is called "Presepe del Pollino" - the Nativity Scene of the Pollino Mountains. The town is built on a very steep hillside, and the houses are densely packed one on top of the other, towering upwards. The entire town, with the ruins of the castle at the top, takes the shape of an almost perfect cone. This gives it a three-dimensionality and a specific silhouette that resembles traditional, three-dimensional nativity scenes.
