The monastery is still inhabited by monks today. Appropriate clothing is required, i.e. shoulders and knees must be covered. However, there are free cloaks available for tourists at the entrance if you are dressed too lightly and have nothing with you. The monastery church is very magnificent. However, photography is not allowed.

The abandoned monastery of Profitis Ilias near Lythrodonta is picturesquely situated on a hill in the Kionia mountains. Unfortunately, the buildings are no longer used or inhabited. However, there is a picnic area and a drinking fountain.

The ride to the Monastery was really nice. Even better was the hike we started from, and ended at, the monastery. Just after the gate there is a nice shop where you also can get something to drink and eat. We visited there on an afternoon when the shop was already closed. But since the weather was really bad (centimeters of snow in March) they showed us a separate room a bit further into the monastery. Some sweets and hot tea was welcoming us there. I wouldn't go there on my own initiative, but the brethern sure were very welcoming when we arrived wet and cold. A place close to my heart.

A week Cyprus was on our to do list. Since we had a rental car, we were able to explore the island well. We also passed through this village in search of geocaches. A stop is worthwhile here. Time has stood still here...

Machairas Monastery a historic monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary located about 40 km from the capital of Cyprus, Nicosia. It lies at an altitude of about 900 m and was founded at the end of the 12th century close to the current village of Lazanias.
