When Baron Christoph Friedrich von Seckendorff-Aberdar, Lord of Unternzenn, had the church renovated and enlarged in 1730/31, little of the original 15th-century structure remained: the choir's surrounding walls and the square lower level of the tower, with epitaphs from the 15th and 16th centuries. The plans for the renovation were provided by the Ansbach Court Building Office under Leopoldo Retti. A new nave and the octagonal upper level of the tower were built. The Protestant St. Martin's Church was built between 1848 and 1849 for the villages of Unteraltenbernheim, Hechelbach, Limbach, and Wimmelbach, as well as the hamlets of Hörhof and Schafhof. With the construction of this church, the Protestant congregation received its own worship space for the first time since its founding.
