A small lake - easy to walk around

The Weißensee is a 2.3 km long lake with a circumference of 6.1 km in the Ostallgäu district in Bavaria west of Füssen on the northern edge of the Alps. The higher Alatsee is only 500 meters further south. The name Weißensee either comes from its shimmering white appearance due to deposited lime or can be explained by the fact that an Alemanne named Wizo settled here around around 600 AD. The lake is located in the landscape protection area that protects parts of the landscape in the area of the city of Füssen and the communities of Weissensee, Eisenberg and Pfronten in the Füssen district. In 753, the Franconian King Pippin bequeathed the lake and its surrounding area to Bishop Wikterp of Augsburg in favor of the newly created monastery cell of St. Mang. After many changes, the city of Füssen finally acquired the lake with fishing rights from private hands in 1928. The Weissensee owes its shape primarily to the ice ages and especially to the Lech glacier, which dead ice probably played a role in shaping.
