Trinity Basilica, Bern The Trinity Church was built 120 years ago, from 1896-1899. On December 4, 1898, the keys were handed over and the church was consecrated by Pastor Jakob Stammler. On Trinity Sunday, June 18, 1899, the church was consecrated to the Holy Trinity by Leonhard Haas, Bishop of Basel and Lugano, in a large ceremony. The church was built in the Lombard Romanesque style. The church tower is 45 meters high. Pope Pius XII. appointed the Trinity Church a "Basilica minor" on April 6, 1956. Basilica minor ("smaller basilica") has been a special honorary title that the Pope has given to an important church building since the 18th century. This title highlights the special importance of the church for the region. It also promotes the strengthening of the unity of Christians with the church in Rome. The identifying mark, the attribute of a basilica, is an umbrella. This can be seen at the main entrance to the church - with the year it was named a basilica.
