The Peddler of Rüschegg Hunger and poverty characterized large parts of this region in the first half of the 19th century. 1816 was even known as the "year without a summer" due to the devastating consequences of a volcanic eruption. Crop failures and storms contributed to the area along the upper Schwarzwasser River sinking into poverty. To find a way out of this hardship, people were inventive. New cheese dairies, mills, craft businesses, and the rise of peddling helped the population out of their misery. Listen to the song about the first peddler of Rüschegg to find out who he was.
