Foundling with board The geographic center of Wesel is on a peninsula on the Auesee in the immediate vicinity of the circular hiking trail. It is marked by a boulder weighing 2.2 tons, which was acquired thanks to a donation from the Hülskens company. A path in the shape of an arrow points to the boulder. On the boulder itself there is a plaque with explanations. Two benches invite you to linger. A second "centre" of Wesel Due to different calculation methods, a second "centre" has been determined. It is located in the Auesee and, strictly speaking, describes the "centre" of Wesel. The designations "center of gravity" and "middle point" depend on the respective calculation method. So that this point can also be seen, a buoy was installed in the Auesee with the help of the Tauchsportgemeinschaft Wesel e.V. and the Wesel Technical Relief Agency. The Hülskens company also donated the buoy and the fastening material with the anchor to the citizens of this city. calculation methods There is no clear scientific definition of a geographic center. In the past, the physical center of gravity was determined as the geographical center in many places. The buoy in the Auesee marks the physical focus. This can be determined very easily by yourself. To do this, you take the outline of the city and choose two different, outer points. The outline is attached to a wall at one of the outer points. A vertical line is drawn from the attachment point. Then repeat this process with the second point. The center of gravity is at the intersection of the two perpendiculars. Another method is to sketch a rectangle around a north-oriented city map. The center of the rectangle is fixed as the geographic center. The different calculation methods lead to different results. To take this fact into account, both points were marked.
