Since the completion of the embankment design, greening and afforestation in 1997/98, the Raßnitzer See, which emerged from the Merseburg-Ost opencast mine that was closed in 1991 together with the Wallendorfer See immediately to the west, has developed into both a popular recreation area and an important natural refuge. Cycling and hiking trails with observation points lead around the lake. On its north bank, a covered observation tower offers the best perspectives of the landscape between Elster-Saale-Aue, the Schkopau power plant, Halle and Leipzig. The lake is an important retreat for flora and fauna, and it is of particular importance for numerous species of waterbirds, both as a breeding ground and as a resting and wintering area. The dumping area between the two lakes, which was originally used for agriculture, was naturalized based on the neighboring floodplain landscapes.
