The Roman bath in Kohlhunden belonged to a villa rustica, which consisted of 10 documented buildings. The remains of the villa were discovered in 2001 during the construction of the Kohlhunden bypass and the state road between Marktoberdorf and Lengenwang. While most of the buildings were only mapped, the bathhouse was excavated and protected from the elements with a roof. The roof is enclosed with glass panels, allowing visitors to view the excavation site even outside of opening hours. The adjacent watchtower did not originally stand here and was only erected to illustrate a certain aspect of Roman life. On the other side of the state road lies the Kuhstallweiher, a kettle hole from the last Ice Age, which is now a popular swimming spot (be careful when swimming near the reeds close to the shore).

The area around Bachtelsee is beautiful for walking and observing the countless water birds in great variety.

Enduro Eldorado

The natural phenomenon known as the Toteisloch (Dead Ice Hole) is located in the Dietringen / Rieden district on Lake Forggensee. It is a small, completely enclosed hollow formed by the burial and subsequent thawing of a block of dead ice. After the ice thawed, the hollow is exposed to the surface. The Toteisloch used to be permanently dry. Today, its bottom lies within the fluctuating water level of Lake Forggensee, so it is usually filled with water, especially in summer.
