The current building is a Gothic Revival replica from 1894, constructed on the site of the original two-story brick structure from the 14th century. It served as a prison until the 19th century and was severely damaged after a lightning strike in May 2024, which completely destroyed one tower and severely damaged the other.

The Stone Gate in Malchin is one of the four gates of the fortifications that once surrounded the town of Malchin. The current structure is a replica of the original two-story brick building with a fieldstone base and pent roof from the 14th century.

The Gothic church, built around 1285 to 1290, is dedicated to John the Baptist. It was first mentioned in 1318. According to an inscription on the tower, construction was completed in 1439.
