H.C. Andersen-Steig: During his stays at Breitenburg, Andersen attended several theater performances in Itzehoe, which at that time had a lively cultural scene but did not yet have its own theater. "In the evening, we went to the Lovers' Theater in Itzehoe. Beforehand, we visited the Kroghs, where the daughters were sitting in the dark—a gentleman quickly disappeared; it was the mayor. The theater was in the town hall. They were performing "Frei nach Regeln," a beautiful play by Töpfer. Trepka played the lover. Miss Waltersdorff, the lady-in-waiting's sister, was an old housekeeper. She returned at 10 o'clock." (Diary entry from February 17, 1843) "Town hall" probably referred to the Estates Hall (to the right of the actual town hall building), which had only been built a few years earlier. Whether the performances took place in the large meeting hall or one of the smaller rooms cannot be determined today.

H.C. Andersen was quite impressed by the beauty of the surroundings of Breitenburg and the Stör valley. In the chapter "Breitenburg" of his work "A Poet's Bazaar," we find this rapturous description: "In the eternally young nature all around, I reveled in old memories. From the high tower of the castle, I gazed far out over the lush marshland, where in summer the fat cattle graze in the grass up to their bellies; I looked at the many forests where Ansgarius wandered and preached Christ's teachings to the Danish heathens; a small village still commemorates this by its name. There stood his house, here he lived. The church beyond, near Heiligenstädten, where the earth is heaped high around the wall, still stands from his time; just as then, it is reflected in the Stör, where he rowed across in his humble fishing boat to the small footpath between the reeds."

The churchyard of St. Anschar Church in Münsterdorf still houses two gravestones of people important to Hans Christian Andersen. One is that of the writer Johann Gottwerth Müller. Andersen wrote about this in his autobiography, "The Fairy Tale of My Life": "(…) we visited the nearby village, Münsterdorph's Cemetery, where Siegfried von Lindenberg's author, Müller von Itzehoe, the translator, as he was also called, Germany's most widely read novelist of the last century, who had written the comic novels from the papers of a brown man, was buried. He was, as mentioned, once the most widely read novelist, yet later forgotten by his contemporaries; he had, however, received a pension from the King of Denmark until his death (June 23, 1828) and was thus able to live and suffer, if he was what we call "a sensitive nature." (…)" Secondly, there is the memorial stone to his patron and friend, Count Conrad zu Rantzau, who was also the main reason for Andersen's visits to Breitenburg. After Rantzau's death, Andersen dedicated this poem to him: By the Stör at the old Breitenburg, Now my mind flies back there with silent sorrow, – Your noble inner being was revealed to me, I saw with Rantzau's heart, with Rantzau's gaze. Where "the Halligen" lie off Schleswig's coast, Like runes, they testify to sunken kingdoms, Of the royal couple you entertained so intimately, And you saw me with a gaze so gentle, so honest. A ray of light came from the bright light of your heart; Time – it is a simple solar fairytale to me. And amidst all the tones of the songs of remembrance, You, the elder, stand, everlastingly young – again and again! We met often – if not at the royal palace – But still great in equal love for our prince – In halls of art, in many a noble home; Often on my lips – but it remained only mine – A wish that I keep deep in my heart: Be good to me – like Conrad Rantzau was!

Until the 1970s, the so-called "Dampferplatz" (Steamer Square) served as a pier at this location. Andersen boarded the paddle steamer "Stör" here three times (1840, 1842, and 1843), which commuted between Hamburg and Itzehoe. The chapter "Reminiscences of the Steamship Stör" in "A Poet's Bazaar" is dedicated to these voyages. Today, one enjoys a beautiful view of the "Delftor Bridge" and the Stör Bend.
