Simply beautiful to look at

This climb is one of the classic options for "attacking" Veleta. Starting from Pinos Genil via Haza Llana, you have 40 kilometers and more than 2,700 meters of elevation gain ahead of you. A spectacular and legendary ascent. Keep in mind that the last stretch is on a broken track. But once you've reached it, you must climb to the geodetic vertex, even if you have to walk.

Canales Reservoir is located in the municipality of Güéjar Sierra. This reservoir, opened in 1988, is located on the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and is a key infrastructure for the region. Its main uses include water supply, irrigation and hydroelectric power generation. In addition, the reservoir area is popular for recreational activities such as fishing, water sports and swimming.

The reservoir is used to supply trick water to 278,000 residents in the area and to irrigate agricultural areas, and there is also a small power plant. Fishing is also permitted and there are some viewpoints and a picnic area on the south bank.

A very challenging climb from north to south. Asphalt and concrete are OK (2022). Over 5 km, it has an average gradient of 12% and a maximum gradient of 22%! Tough it up! The suffering is rewarded with the further ascent to the Pico del Veleta, the highest paved mountain in Europe, on a route with incredibly little traffic, even on weekends. IMHO, the best climb.

Decent asphalt (2023), very nice views and very little traffic (except on weekends). For me the most beautiful and least traffic approach to the Pico del Veleta. To do this, turn right in Güéjar Sierra (towards the south) and go up the Haza Llana (note: very demanding route, over just under 5 km there is an average gradient of 12% and a maximum gradient of 22%). Between the ascent of Pinos Genil and Guejar Sierra, an intermediate point is the Canales dam and the town of Canales, a good place for trout fishing and to take beautiful photos.

The Canales Dam is a gigantic reservoir at the foot of the Sierra Nevada and has made it to number 167 in the world's largest dam rankings - not that this is noted on a sign anywhere on site. But at least. And from the dam in the west you also have an excellent view of the reservoir and can relax and devote yourself to a small photo session - undisturbed by any car traffic. A highlight at the foot of an even bigger highlight.
