The Coral Woods Nature Loop offers a delightful journey through diverse landscapes, transitioning from open prairie with mowed grass paths to a winding singletrack through a mixed tree forest. You'll encounter bridges over small streams and can enjoy birdwatching, wildflowers, and wildlife spotting. The highlight is undoubtedly the largest stand of maple trees in McHenry County, along with century-old red and white oaks, which create a spectacular display of fall colors.
This easy 1.7-mile (2.7 km) hike involves only 51 feet (16 metres) of elevation gain and takes about 42 minutes to complete, making it accessible for most. A large parking lot, restrooms, and picnic areas are available, ensuring a convenient visit. While the trail is generally gentle, stable footwear is recommended for spring hikes when stream crossings can be muddy. Autumn is the best time to visit, especially for the vibrant foliage.
Coral Woods Conservation Area is a significant ecological site, protecting one of only eight oak groves in McHenry County spanning 100 acres or more. It's also home to the county's largest sugar maple grove, with trees dating back 80-100 years, so much so that it hosts a Sugar Maple Festival in the fall. The Conservation District has also undertaken extensive restoration efforts, enhancing the natural appeal of this unique area.
