The Lech is a right tributary of the Danube. The Augsburg Ice Canal is the world's first artificial whitewater course and is located in the Augsburg district of Spickel. It was built for the canoe slalom competitions of the 1972 Summer Olympics and is considered the "mother of all artificial canoe slalom courses". The course is 308 meters long, has a height difference of 4.1 meters and a water speed of 3 to 6 meters per second. With a width of 10 to 12 meters and a depth of 40 to 120 centimeters, the ice canal has a difficulty level of WW IV. Since its opening, the ice canal has regularly hosted national and international competitions, including World Cups, European Championships and World Championships in canoe slalom. In 2019, the ice canal was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the "Augsburg Water Management System". Paddlers have the opportunity to paddle the course.
