Heidenweiher When the Celtic Gauls were gradually subjugated under Caesar from around 60 BC and the Romans extended their rule to the Rhine, a break in the population structure occurred. The Celtic population largely remained in their settlements, but gradually adopted Roman customs and traditions and gradually merged with the new Roman settlers to form the Gallo-Roman people. A new early Roman burial ground was created in the Peterswald near the Celtic burial mounds. At least 10 burials were found there. Some graves contained lance tips, a small axe, brooches (garment clasps) and rich ceramics. In medieval times, Roman finds were classified as pagan places. The field names "Auf der Heide", "Heidegewanne", "Heidenwald" and "Heidenweiher" that are still in use today could have their origins from this. But it is also possible that the names are derived from the vegetation (heather). From the middle of the 19th century until the 1930s, the Heidenweiher served as an ice pond for the two breweries based in Schönenberg.
