Jens Bang's Stone House In the heart of Aalborg, Denmark, stands an impressive testament to the splendor and architectural brilliance of the Dutch Renaissance: the Jens Bang's House. Known locally as Jens Bang's Stone House, this iconic structure is not just a building of stone and mortar, but a living piece of history, echoing tales from the 17th century. With its magnificent facade and intricate details, the Jens Bang's House is a must-see for anyone visiting this charming Danish city. The Story Behind the Jens Bang's House Jens Bang, a name synonymous with wealth and ambition, was one of Denmark's richest citizens in the 1600s. Born in Horsens, Bang moved to Aalborg in 1600 and quickly rose through the ranks of the city's merchant guild. Despite his wealth, Bang never held public office, possibly due to his notorious temper. Yet his legacy lives on in the magnificent residence he built in 1624, a testament to his success and vision. Bang's story is as fascinating as the house itself. Known for his aggressive nature, he was both a formidable businessman and a controversial figure. His decision to build the Jens Bang House was not merely to create a home, but also to make a statement. The sheer size and grandeur of the building reflected his status and ambition, a bold declaration to the world. An Architectural Masterpiece The Jens Bang House is celebrated as one of Denmark's finest private Renaissance buildings. Its architecture is a stunning example of the Dutch Renaissance style, characterized by its ornate gables and sculpted window decorations. The building's facade is adorned with intricate stonework, including gargoyles and a cheeky sculpture of Bang himself playfully sticking out his tongue. The five-story building is a marvel of design. The ground floor, once bustling with market stalls, testifies to its past as a trading center. The first floor, where Bang lived, impresses with large sandstone-framed windows, each uniquely decorated with angels and gargoyles. The building's central oriel window, originally the main entrance, is a masterpiece of sculpted figures and decorations, bearing the year 1623.

One of the most beautiful places

Musikkens Hus, the House of Music, is a multi-purpose building offering a variety of concerts and musical experiences. The House of Music boasts beautiful views of the Limfjord and features, among other things, four concert halls, five stages, a restaurant, and classrooms.

Jørgen Olufsen's Courtyard, located on Østerågade near Nytorv in Aalborg, is an outstanding Renaissance merchant's house dating back to 1616. Built by the then-mayor Jørgen Olufsen, the courtyard is one of the best-preserved of its time in Denmark. At the entrance to Østerågade, we see an iron bar with a sturdy hook. It served as a scale, allowing customers to verify that everything was fair. On Østerågade, we see the front of the building complex: a stone house with a gable facing the street and a timber-framed wing, often called the "Hamborggården." The stone house with its grand staircase is richly decorated. The sandstone portal, adorned with male and female Hermes figures, bears the initials of its patron, Mayor Jørgen Olufsen, and the year 1616. In a niche higher up stands a beautiful female figure, the "Aalborg Girl," which has been remarkably well preserved despite its 360 years. From the bank building's courtyard, we can see the entire south wing all the way to Maren Turis Gade; a truly impressive sight. Jørgen Olufsen was the brother of Jens Bang.
