Monument in the castle park

In addition to the medical and research location, the castle park is the place with which the people of Buch particularly identify. The park is a green oasis in the middle of the town center, a stone's throw from the train station and the shopping center.

The sculpture was created as part of the 2nd International Sculpture Symposium Berlin (East Berlin) with artists from nine countries, which took place in 1987 on the occasion of Berlin's 750th anniversary. The sandstone stele "Mitwelt" was selected to commemorate this artists' meeting and was erected in 1988 on the site of the Buch Castle, which was demolished in 1964. The stele and the base are covered with reliefs with various motifs on the theme of "humans, mitwelt, environment". The elements and figures modeled from the stone are interwoven in "full, natural symbolism". They show salamanders, birds, dogs, roosters and other animals, surrounded by a floral network. The Mater Dolorosa Church in Berlin-Buch is a hall church in the former Buch colony and was consecrated in 1936. In connection with the local sanatoriums, more and more people settled there, primarily in single-family homes. However, the services on Sundays and public holidays took place "in the prayer rooms of the local sanatoriums". The foundation stone for the new church was laid in 1934. The architect was Josef Weber. Mater dolorosa or "Sorrowful Mother" was given this name because of the many sick people in the area. The architecture seems to be influenced by the spirit of the Bauhaus. The brick-faced rectangular building with a gable roof has a special stepped gable with a front-panelled facade, which ends in a cross. Incidentally, a tower was planned, but could not be built for cost reasons. In 1988/89, the interior of the church was fundamentally rebuilt and redesigned. This example, which stands in the north-eastern corner of the Bucher Schlosspark, is actually the smallest bridge in Berlin registered in the land registry. It crosses a side canal of the Panke in a small, cast-iron arch with a metal railing and has a span of just under 2 m.

The somewhat disrespectfully named "duck pond" is of course the castle pond of the former Buch Castle. From the 1760s onwards, the park was redesigned and expanded under the von Voß family in the style of an English landscape garden. The paths were made into arches, the canals were widened and the castle pond was given its current appearance. And yes, there are ducks too, of course 🙂.
