From August to November 1944, a subcamp of the Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp in Alsace operated in Walldorf. The SS transferred 1,700 imprisoned girls and women from Auschwitz and forced them to work on the Züblin construction site at Frankfurt Airport. The forced laborers were forced to construct a concrete runway, performing extremely physically demanding work. Many of the women became ill, suffered from hunger, and died of exhaustion. In addition, they suffered brutal treatment at the hands of the guards. In November 1944, the camp was dissolved, and the women were transferred to the Ravensbrück concentration camp. Of the 1,700 Hungarian Jewish women, only about 330 survived the war. Since 1980, a memorial stone near the site of the former concentration camp subcamp has commemorated the fate of the victims. The Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI) is the German Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedical Drugs and has been based in Langen since 1987. It works in the areas of approval, safety and research for medical products, monitors clinical trials and thus ensures drug safety. The forecourt of the Paul Ehrlich Institute features two striking sculptures by the sculptor Waldemar Otto in public space. (1929–2020) The bust of Paul Ehrlich (1854–1915) honors the institute's namesake. A reduced, yet expressive representation of his portrait. The large sculpture entitled "Variations 2" deals with the concept of the key-lock principle - a central biological mechanism that Paul Ehrlich coined for medicine. In 2013, the “Gate of Friendship” was inaugurated at the “Tarsus complex”. The building is reminiscent of the ancient “Cleopatra Gate” in Langen’s twin town in Turkey.
